Some weekends it seems everything is happening at once. Like, couldn’t they spread it out a little so we wouldn’t have to choose and miss out on some other great event? This is one of these weekends. Choose wisely.
Fleet Week
So all those flyovers and sonic booms you’ve been experiencing this week in San Francisco? Just the warm up to the big show on Saturday and Sunday, when the Blue Angels buzz our fair city with death-defying aerial feats. The best view is at Fisherman’s Wharf, where the show is centered, but most any hill or rooftop in the city will do. Sat and Sun all day.
Columbus Day Bazaar
If you do come to Fisherman’s Wharf for the jets, make it a daily double and stroll over to North Beach for this nearly 100-year-old festival. The parade on Sunday is especially enjoyable. Sat and Sun all day.
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival
Three days of completely free music in Golden Gate Park from some of the best bluegrass and country musicians on the planet. And as the name suggests, it’s not all bluegrass, but also rock, folk and etc. Fri, Sat and Sun all day.
Castro Street Fair
This is a good old fashioned country fair, as campily reinterpreted by our friends and neighbors in and around the Castro. Expect live entertainment and general fun and wackiness throughout. Sun 11am-6pm.
Rock and Roll half marathon, San Jose
You’ll never have as much fun running 13-plus miles than when live bands greet you at every mile. If you’re tempted to stop and dance a while, go right ahead, this race is all about the journey over the destination. Sun 8am.
